Finding Internship Opportunities

Below are some example sources for potential internship opportunities:

Career Center, Department, External Sources

• Internship Program website provides information on internship options, including access to internship specialists in the Career Center who can help you find internships.
  • Career Coach of the UNT Career Center for Geography and GIS+CS students: Evan Tom (evan.tom@unt.edu) Evan is available to meet with our students for one-on-one career coaching appointments. Students interested in an appointment can book one directly through their Navigate student portal. All information to book an appointment will be listed in their student portal. • Handshake is the program that the Career Center uses for many of its resources. It has a job listing website where you can search for jobs and internships, as well as set up notifications for new job postings.
• Any internship and job opportunities that our department receives can be found here or through our Canvas Page (Geography majors and minors can request to be added to our Canvas page by sending an email to geog@unt.edu).

Geography Undergraduate Advisors and Faculty

• If you are interested in gaining experience in a particular subfield (e.g., business, health, GIS, environmental, etc.), talk to an advisor or a faculty member who specializes in this area. They often have a network of alumni and employers that they keep in contact with.

Applying for Internships

The application process for internships is similar to applying for full-time jobs. You should take the application process seriously. You may not get an internship with the company that you applied to, but in the future, you may apply to them again for a full-time job. The GIS job market in particular is comprised of a very tight-knit community. We encourage students who get internships to report them to the Career Center. • Resume - up-to-date, tailored to the duties listed in the internship job description
  • LinkedIn Learning Course - Writing a Successful Resume
  • LinkedIn Learning Course - Writing a Tech Resume
  • LinkedIn Learning Course - Optimize your Resume for Applicant Tracking Systems
  • Career Center - have an advisor review your resume
• Application - often an online form
• Cover letter - sometimes this is optional or part of the online application.
• References - a list of people who can vouch for your qualifications. Sometimes this is optional for internships, especially if you have been recommended directly by a faculty member or employer.
