Meet Laura Lopez, a passionate and driven undergraduate student in the Department of Geography and
the Environment at UNT! Laura is pursuing her B.S. in Geography with a concentration in Environmental Studies, and she’s also earning certificates in Sustainability and GIS—a combination that reflects both her curiosity and commitment to making an impact.
So what sparked Laura’s interest in geography? “I like how broad geography is,” she shares. “I’ve enjoyed my time in this program because I get to take a wide range of courses—like Biogeography and Python Programming!” She originally began her college journey as an ecology major, but after taking an Intro to GIS course, she discovered a new path. “I learned more about the field of geography and changed my major shortly after. I’ve been loving it ever since!”
One of Laura’s favorite parts about being a student at UNT is the strong sense of community. “I’ve met countless amazing people through classes and campus organizations,” she says. “The best part is taking advantage of all the school has to offer.”
Looking ahead, Laura hopes to move up north and work in the environmental sector, using the tools and knowledge she’s gained at UNT to contribute to sustainability and environmental justice.
Reflecting on her time as an undergraduate, she shares one of the most valuable lessons she’s learned: “Never let others make you feel like your voice doesn’t matter. Speaking up and advocating for yourself can be difficult, but it’s a powerful and essential part of personal growth.”
When asked what advice she has for fellow students, Laura encourages everyone to get involved: “There are so many clubs, research opportunities, and volunteering events. Getting involved helps you learn more, meet new people, and it really stands out to future employers.”
