Currently a graduate student under the guidance of Professor Dr. Pinliang Dong, Jenish's
research focuses on the Urban Heat Island effect and the factors that influence it,
such as building height. Using cutting-edge Geospatial technologies like LiDAR, satellite
imaging, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), his work explores ways to address
and mitigate this pressing environmental issue.
Jenish’s interest in Geography was sparked at a young age. As a child, he was fascinated by atlases, often tracing his fingers over different counties and landscapes while wondering how places changed over time. This curiosity evolved when he began studying Geomatics Engineering and worked on projects that demonstrated the power of maps and spatial data in solving real-world problems. These experiences motivated him to pursue graduate studies in Geography.
The University of North Texas (UNT) caught Jenish’s attention due to its strong focus on remote sensing, GIS, and climate studies, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with experienced faculty and access advanced geospatial technologies. “The program aligned perfectly with my research interests,” he says. “The welcoming community and resources for international students made me feel like UNT was a place where I could truly grow both academically and personally.”
Reflecting on his academic journey, Jenish shares that it has been a fulfilling blend
of growth and challenges. “I’ve been constantly challenged and inspired,” he says,
“from discussions to hands-on experiences with advanced geospatial tools. It’s been
a supportive academic environment, and the opportunity to work on research that truly
excites me has been incredibly rewarding.”
Beyond academics, Jenish highlights the value of meeting people from diverse backgrounds,
sharing cultures, and forming friendships that feel like family away from home. “I’ve
found a great balance between academics and life,” he adds.
During his undergraduate years, Jenish learned the importance of time management and organization—skills that have been crucial in managing the demands of coursework, projects, and extracurricular activities. These skills have helped him stay focused on his goals and prioritize tasks effectively. His advice to fellow students? “Stay curious, explore all aspects of Geography, and seize every opportunity. Build connections, network with professors, and enjoy the journey!”
After earning his Master’s in Geography, Jenish aspires to work in remote sensing and GIS, applying these technologies to solve real-world challenges. “In the long term, I want to remain engaged with the geospatial community and continue advancing my expertise,” he says.
When he's not working on his research, Jenish can be found seeking out thrilling adventures. As an “adventure junkie,” he’s bungee-jumped from the world’s second-highest jump, rafted through wild rivers, and even soared through the sky paragliding. “If it gets the heart racing, you’ll probably find me there, enjoying the thrill!” he says.
We are incredibly proud of Jenish Chauhan and all that he has achieved in our department. We look forward to following his future successes and exciting ventures as he makes his mark in the world of Geography!
