Each year, we offer a variety of scholarships to recognize achievement, encourage research, and help our students succeed. Whether you are an undergraduate exploring your first project or a graduate student expanding your fieldwork, these awards are designed to support your academic journey.

Departmental Scholarships

Each year, the Department of Geography and the Environment offers merit-based scholarships to help students take their research and scholarly work further. Awards are typically around $250, with final amounts depending on available funds and the strength of the applications.

Geospatial Technology Scholarship

Supports student work in GIS, mapping, remote sensing, and other geospatial tools. This scholarship is designed for students exploring how technology shapes our understanding of place and space.

Physical Geography Scholarship

Recognizes projects focused on Earth’s natural systems, including climate, landforms, soils, water, and ecosystems. This scholarship is intended for students investigating the physical processes that shape our world.

Human Geography Scholarship
Highlights research centered on people, cultures, cities, and development. This scholarship is a good fit for students studying the connections between human activity, community, and environment.
Graduate Student Data & Field Studies Scholarship

Supports graduate students conducting field-based research or managing significant data projects. This scholarship helps offset the costs of travel, equipment, and data collection.

Alumni Endowment Scholarship

The Geography Alumni Endowed Scholarship was established through generous contributions from UNT Geography alumni to support student research. Each year, this fund provides a small award to assist graduate students with their summer research projects.

This scholarship is awarded annually based on fund availability and recommendations from the department’s Advisory Committee. Please check back for more details on application procedures and award amounts as they become available.

F. Andrew Schoolmaster Awards

The F. Andrew Schoolmaster Awards recognize exceptional achievement by Geography students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. These awards honor academic excellence, research quality, and the lasting contributions of students who stand out in their programs. Recipients are nominated by faculty, with final selections made each spring.

F. Andrew Schoolmaster Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Student

Honors a junior or senior Geography major who has demonstrated excellence in coursework and research. Eligible students must have completed at least four Geography courses, hold a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher, and have produced an outstanding course project. Candidates are nominated by faculty, with a complete dossier due each year by January 15.

F. Andrew Schoolmaster Award for Outstanding Graduate Student

Recognizes a graduate student, typically in their second year, who has excelled in research and scholarship. Eligible students must hold a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and have completed an outstanding thesis. Faculty nominations are required, with a complete dossier due each year by January 15.

Nationally Competitive Awards

All UNT students are encouraged to explore nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships. These awards provide valuable opportunities for research, service, and leadership.
