Dr. Rice is an urban-economic geographer with primary research and teaching interests related to business location issues in the United States and Canada.

Research interests include investigation of the geography of corporate headquarters, subsidiary offices, and members of corporate boards, as well as the evolving distribution of retail and commercial activity across North American metropolitan areas.

He is also interested in issues relating to the growth and development of cities, including studies of suburbanization, urban sprawl, and commuting. Dr. Rice teaches a variety of courses that link closely to his research interests, including Advanced Quantitative Methods, Research Design and Geographic Applications, Applied Retail Geography, Urban Geography, and The Geography of the US and Canada. Dr. Rice advises graduate student research in areas that correspond with his research. Recent thesis work supervised by Dr. Rice includes research into the urban impacts of shopping mall development, strategies for multinational retail expansion, and university student commuting patterns.
