This month, we are excited to shine our Student Spotlight on Laurie Medina, a dedicated undergraduate student in the Department of Geography at UNT. Laurie
is majoring in Geography and pursuing a certificate in Sustainability, blending her
interests in human-environment interaction and interdisciplinary learning.
Laurie’s journey into geography began at UNT’s orientation, where she attended a “Find Your Major” panel. After sharing her passion for exploring the ways humans interact with the earth, a panelist suggested that UNT Geography might be the perfect fit for her — and she quickly discovered they were right. “I love the interdisciplinary nature of geography,” Laurie says. “Geographic knowledge can be useful in any field. I wanted to learn more about how humans interact with the earth and what location and place have to do with it.”
Since joining the program, Laurie has embraced everything UNT has to offer. “Being a student here has allowed me to meet so many people from incredibly diverse backgrounds and with vastly different interests,” she shares. “I’ve made lifelong friends who teach me new things and push me to be my best self.”
Laurie’s time at UNT has been filled with remarkable experiences. She spent summer 2024 working on a month-long archaeological dig in Belize, interned at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens in summer 2025, and has served as a Supplemental Instructor for five semesters, helping students in PSCI 2306 and ANTH 1010. She also brings her leadership skills to the Geography Student Association, where she currently serves as Co-Chair, building community and planning exciting events for her fellow students.
Looking to the future, Laurie plans to pursue a master’s degree in geography after completing her undergraduate studies. She carries with her an important lesson
she’s learned during her time at UNT: “Do not wait around to make something great! Whether it's homework or big projects,
putting them off does no good. Projects and papers are much more fun if you work on
them a little at a time.”
Her advice for fellow geography students is simple but powerful: “Don’t be afraid to start something new. Every time I’ve tried something outside of my comfort zone, I’ve come away with new experiences and great stories.” She also encourages everyone to get involved with the Geography Student Association, where she’s made “wonderful friends and memories.”
When she’s not studying or leading campus organizations, Laurie enjoys exploring Denton. One of her favorite local spots is Thai Ocha on Malone Street, which she says is perfect for a cozy meal when the weather turns chilly.
Fun fact: Laurie’s first semester at UNT was a busy one — she was part of the Green Brigade as a member of the color guard!
The Department of Geography is proud to highlight Laurie Medina as our September Student Spotlight. Her passion for learning, leadership, and community makes her an inspiring example of the vibrant students who make our program exceptional. Congratulations, Laurie!
