At this year's Annual Association of American Geographers Meeting (AAG) in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Joseph Oppong received the Kwadwo Konadu-Agyemang Distinguished Scholar Award in African Geography.

Oppong is a medical geographer who has conducted research on disease in Africa for decades. He has published numerous scholarly works on this topic, including "HIV and AIDS in Africa: Beyond Epidemiology". His current research includes such topics as Buruli Ulcer, schistosomiasis in Ghana, urban slum health, and computational epidemiology (the use of computer simulations to understand geographic patterns of disease spread).
