Field Experience

Director, UNT Archaeological Field School (Summer 2005)

Directed undergraduate field course at the Merlyn Dahlin site (41WS38) in Wise County, Texas.  Course included training students in survey and excavation methods as well as in the use of field equipment.  The course also involved detailed consideration of local and regional culture history and environments, including analysis of local geology and soils.  Students were expected to master all aspects of field training and synthesize these skills in a term paper on the field project.

Research Director, Next Step Education through Archaeology Project (Summer 2002)

Directed field-school Phase II investigation of site 12MA648 Marion County, Indiana. The program consisted of twelve staff members (graduate and undergraduate students from Indiana universities) who taught local high-school students archaeological field methods.  Staff mentored field-school-student research projects that are included in an edited report submitted to the Indiana Department of Historic Preservation and Archaeology.  Responsibilities of the research supervisor included managing the staff, preparing and editing the 2002 field report, mentoring high school, field-school students in research, and organization of a symposium on site research (presented by the staff) at the Midwest Archaeology Conference, which included mentoring staff members in their research.

Cultural Resources Intern, Missouri Department of Transportation (Summer 2001)

Served as a field assistant during extensive archaeological survey of numerous planned highway right-of-ways and bridge replacements throughout the state of Missouri.  Work included shovel-testing, auger-testing, and limited test excavation.

Field Intern, Denver Museum of Nature and Science (August 2000)

Assisted directors of a large-scale paleontological block excavation at the Bones Galore site (Oligocene/Miocene) in northeast Colorado.   Responsibilities included establishing horizontal grid lines for excavation area, assistance with supervision of a large volunteer field crew, and excavation and field preservation of paleontological materials.

Field Intern, Crow Canyon Archaeological Center (Summer 1997)

Rated as the top field internship in archaeology during year of appointment.  Assisted directors of an extensive test excavation of Yellow Jacket Pueblo near Cortez, Colorado.  Responsibilities included excavating complex stratified architectural deposits, brief use of total station to establish horizontal proveniences, and interaction with students attending field and lab classes at the center.

Field Assistant, United States Construction and Engineering Research Laboratory (Summer 1996)

USACERL was engaged in cultural-resource impact assessment of the United States Army at Fort Riley, Kansas.  Responsibilities included survey and test excavation of impacted prehistoric and historic sites. Work included non-intrusive survey methods (e.g., magnetic resonance and resistivity) and site location and mapping using total station and hand-held GPS.

Field Courses (1991 through 1993)

1993     Arizona State University Archaeological Field School: Quarai Pueblo, New Mexico.

1991          California Polytechnic State University Historical Archaeology Field School, Mission San Antonio de Padua, California.

1991Arizona State University Field Methods Course: Tonto River Basin, Arizona.

Lab Experience

Collaborating Zooarchaeologist for Crow Canyon Archaeological Center (2009 to present)

This research involves zooarchaeological analysis of assemblages from sites excavated by Crow Canyon as part of their ongoing research program in the Mesa Verde region.  This includes sponsorship of a semi-annual zooarchaeology internship, analysis of faunal assemblages, production of faunal reports, and contribution to scholarly presentations and publications.

Consulting Faunal Analyst for UNT Center for Environmental Archaeology (2006 & 2007)

Analysis of faunal remains from two late Holocene site in the Clear Fork and West Fork of the Upper Trinity River.  Analysis includes taxonomic and element identifications, taphonomic assessment of faunal samples, and summary in a short report that assess the archaeological value of the fauna under examination.

Consulting Faunal Analyst for Geo-Marine, Inc. (2004 to present)

This work consists of small faunal analysis projects that Geo-Marine, Inc. cannot do with its own personnel.  Analysis comprises taxonomic and element identifications, taphonomic assessment of faunal samples, and summary in a short report that assess the archaeological value of the fauna under examination.

Faunal Analyst, Ek Balam, Yucatán, Mexico

Analysis of archaeofaunal assemblage from royal burial.  Included complete identification of mammalian, reptilian, and marine remains interred with the human burial.  Investigated behavioral ecology and dietary significance of taxa represented in the burial.

Faunal Analyst, Arnold Research Cave (23CY64), MO.  (1997 through 2001)

Ph.D. dissertation research on Holocene rockshelter fauna from central Missouri.  Included complete rehabilitation and re-curation of entire artifact collection from the cave housed at the University of Missouri Museum Support Center, identification of faunal remains (approximately 6,000 identifiable remains), and critical zooarchaeological analysis of the fauna.  Research included formulation of a model to interpret environmental change during the Holocene in the vicinity of the shelter, relative abundance analysis of small prey remains from the site, biogeography of prairie taxa represented at the cave, and morphometric analysis of white-tailed deer body size during the Holocene.

Faunal Analyst and Taphonomist, Crabtree Site (23CL164), MO.  (1998)

Identified and reported fauna under contract with the Missouri Department of Transportation.  Work included basic identification of bone fragments to element and taxon as well as taphonomic assessment of the fauna.

Student Assistant Professional, Museum Support Center, University of Missouri. (1995 through 1997)

Rehabilitation of archaeological collections housed at the University of Missouri Museum Support Center.  Upgraded collections to acid free plastic and paper storage materials.

Faunal Analyst, Tony Glas Site (32EM3), ND [w/C. Darwent].  (1996)

Assisted with taxonomic identfication of bone tools recovered from the site.  Developed paradigmatic classification of bone tools based on element used and use-wear exhibited.

Faunal Analyst and Taphonomist, Lawson Cave, MO (paleontological). (1994 through 1996)

M.A. thesis research on a faunal collection excavated from a natural trap in central Missouri.  Black-bear remains were predominant in the collection; taphonomic work focused on the effects of ursids on the fauna and analytical documentation of the site as a trap as opposed to a den.  Research also included morphometric analysis of the ursid remains in relation to bears from other regions of North America and evaluation of ursid mortality data.
