Fire Island New York, before and after Hurricane Sandy; a dramatic example of coastal geomorphic change.

I'm a geomorphologist; I’m interested in how processes such as erosion and deposition shape the earth’s surface. I’m also interested in the interaction between people and the physical environment; examples include natural hazards, such as river flooding and hurricanes, and how urbanization impacts the physical environment. I encourage the use of modern geographical techniques, such as GIS, GPS, modeling and remote sensing, as valuable tools in geomorphological research. I am willing to work with students on a wide variety of geomorphological research projects. In recent years my own research focus has been:
* Coastal Geomorphology
* Hurricane Storm Surge Sedimentation
* Sedimentation on Coastal Marshes
* Paleotempestology (study of ancient storms) in Texas, Louisiana, Thailand, South Korea and Vietnam.
* Tropical Cyclone Variability in the Western North Pacific in Response to Holocene Climate Changes
(For more details about my research, see my Research Page)

I'm a strong believer in the value of fieldwork and I encourage students to incorporate fieldwork into their thesis research. I also encourage students to participate in professional aspects of their education - this includes presenting their work at regional, national and international conferences and co-authoring journal articles.
