Course Outline

Course Description: This is an introductory GIS course focusing on hands‑on experience using MapInfo software to map spatial data and answer geographic questions. Topics include: mapping spatial data, querying attribute databases, map design and printing, data sources, importation of databases, buffering, geographic selecting, geocoding, thematic mapping and applications of spatial analysis. Includes guest lectures by guests who use GIS professionally.

Instruction: The class meets in EESAT 340 on Tuesdays from 2-2.50 for a 50-minute lecture. The accompanying lab is Tuesday 3-4.50 also in EESAT 340. Weekly lab work consists of tutorials, a tutorial quiz (due at the end of lab) and an assignment and homework (due the following week). Good attendance is expected of all students and will be checked periodically – students may be dropped for non-attendance after three unexcused absences.

Text: None – the software has an online user’s guide. Tutorials will be supplied – a large 3-ring binder is recommended to store tutorials*. A USB flash drive is recommended to store files.

A late penalty of 10% per day (up to 4 days) will be applied to late weekly quizzes, labs, homework and the semester project. The 12 assignments are all worth the same. The 9 homework exercises are all worth the same. The project will be due April 24th. All of the theory exams are worth the same. All of the lab exams are worth the same. Theory exams are closed-book exams. Lab exams are open-book exams. ** Graduate students do the semester project (5%) and complete a second independent project (5%).
Extra Credit
The Department of Geography does not allow extra credit assignments (work not specified on a course syllabus).

Cheating and Plagiarism Statement: Students caught cheating or plagiarizing will receive a "0" for that particular assignment or exam.  Additionally, the incident will be reported to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities for further penalty.  According to the UNT catalog, the term "cheating" includes, but is not limited to: a. use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations; b. dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or carrying out other assignments; c. the acquisition, without permission, of tests or other academic material belonging to a faculty or staff member of the university; d. dual submission of a paper or project, or resubmission of a paper or project to a different class without express permission from the instructor(s); or e. any other act designed to give a student an unfair advantage. The term "plagiarism" includes, but is not limited to: a. the knowing or negligent use by paraphrase or direct quotation of the published or unpublished work of another person without full and clear acknowledgment; and b. the knowing or negligent unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials.
*Students are responsible for retaining all graded materials in event of a grade dispute.
