Dr. Joseph Oppong (Professor: UNT Geography and the Environment and Associate Dean: Toulouse Graduate School) was elected as a National Councilor to the American Association of Geographers (AAG; see results here). Dr. Oppong has served in several leadership capacities at the AAG, including as Chair of the Health and Medical Geography Specialty Group (HMGSG) and Africa Specialty Group. He has served as an editorial member of several journals published by the AAG and was a Steering Committee Member and US Representative for International Geographers Union (IGU) Commission on Health and Environment. As part of his role as a National Councilor, he will take part in the overall governance of the AAG. Dr. Oppong has been a strong advocate for graduate student education and success in his role as the Academic Associate Dean of the Robert Toulouse Graduate School at UNT. He plans to continue his efforts to improve graduate student experience in his role as one of the National Councilors. Specifically, he will focus attention on creating professional development workshops for graduate students, providing resources to address mental health challenges faced by graduate students, and mentoring programs for new assistant professors.
