From Austin Chalk to Eagle Ford: Geography Students explore Dallas’s geomorphology

Geography students explored the geomorphology of the Dallas area last weekend (November 8th). Guided by Dr. Harry Williams and accompanied by Dr. Matt Fry, the geomorphology class field trip started by examining modern floodplain and Quaternary terraces in the vicinity of Love Field. They then moved on to an Austin Chalk river bluff overlooking the American Airlines Center. After a quick dash down I-45, they checked out even more terraces in the Hutchins area. From there, the group climbed 400 feet up the dipslope of the Austin Chalk, arriving in Cedar Hill, and then traveled down the White Rock Escarpment into the strike valley of the Eagle Ford Shale. The weather was perfect, and fortunately no students got lost (Photo 1)!
