Speaker: Tanya Synar, Texas Woman's University
Title: Sculpting Connections: Galaxies in Iron and Yellowstone in Sound
Short Bio: Tanya Synar is a sculptor and installation artist. Her creative interests involve crossing over into the sciences to develop her work. She has collaborated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and has won numerous grants and awards including an Illinois Arts Council grant, Puffin Foundation grant, and several Texas Woman's University research and development grants and awards. She has exhibited nationally and internationally including shows at Historic Duff House-Outstation of the National Galleries-Scotland and Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. She creates by experiencing the landscape, casting metal, searching scientific data, experimenting with color shifting paint, machining plastic and capturing moving images and sound. Currently in progress projects include Mapping Galaxy's in Iron involving 3D imaging photographic data taken from the Hubble Space Telescope and The Yellowstone Project a sound installation of geothermal systems in the national park.
